Sydenham Take on Table Toppers

The news must be reported whether it's good or bad, right? On a night when Sydenham had too much in the kitchen, Bromley had too much on court. With two in-form players sidelined, it was a tough ask for Team. Players bravely stepped up throughout the order as Bromley introduced a new number one and the rest shuffled down a place. Admittedly a strong team, if Bromley did say so themselves. Rimmington vs. The Crab. No pun intended, but I've never seen so many nicks in a game of squash. This chap shuffled around court with an extra low centre of gravity. Side to side movements that you'd expect to see at Whitby Bay or Brighton Beach. The Crab was too good, an easy win. Team 1-0 down. Sydenham's Son had stepped into the hot seat to chance his arm against 'Boy Wonder'. Boy Wonder was decent, and although the Sydenham man gave him a good a run in the first, Boy Wonder slipped into a relaxed, cool state, barely breathing a word, even expecting the marker to know telepathically when he was asking for a stroke or a let. He went on to win in 3. Evans and MacNicol were taking on Ian and James respectively while this reporter was crying over the onions and staring into the abyss of the chilli pot. A game in either match notched up for Team, but ultimately two more losses for for SLTC(S)C. 3-1 a piece and the match over. The last game provided a spectacle. Dan W pitching his skills against an England over 35s international. There was some text book squash; fine lengths and beautiful technique. Dan was in the game and but for some tough calls by the marker, and a couple of foot faults from the Sydenham man - that's right, haven't seen many of one called, have you? - it could have been a different story. Unfortunately it wasn't to be and his opponent's metronome like style closed it out 3-1. People fled and others were fed. The leftovers could have serviced the 5000 but logistically it was ruled out. Bromley topped the table and Team were left to reflect. They were strong, very strong and there was no shame in defeat. The season is young and Team are still 4th with everything to play for. Every point and every game counts.
