The racketball league has now finished, with League One having been won by Ian Moody and League Two by Peter Lewis, both by handsome margins. This means that the round robin stage of the 2017 tournament, the premier event of the Sydenham racketball year, is now open. The handicaps of some of the newer players have changed to take account of the progress they have made. All the handicaps are shown on the notice board on the court balcony. James Siu has joined the racketball group and Greg Marsden has left, so there are 20 Players in the tournament and hence 19 games for each player to play in the round robin stage, which will last until 25 March, so as to provide the average commitment to about one and a half games a week referred to in the notice of 15 December which invited entrants to the competition. The finals will be on Sunday 2 April. The notice of 15 December also gave full details of the competition, the most important of which for the round robin stage is the injunction that, when challenges are issued by e mail, the recipient should respond promptly (meaning within hours not days!) and, if he can’t accept the date proposed, should, wherever possible, offer alternatives. Only if all the games are played will the final result be properly representative. No knighthood will be awarded to the winner of the tournament (at least, not for services to racketball) but he will be rewarded with a gold cup (well with a gold coloured cup as gold itself is beyond the club’s means, thanks to the soaring sterling value of precious metals sparked by the prospect of Brexit) and by a place on the honours board. Bradley is entering the competition and aims to get his game in during the two weeks before he goes back to university, so please try to make yourselves available to play him during this period.
