With three weeks to go until the scheduled ending of the round robin stage of the tournament and impressive number of games have already been played. Indeed Harry Cole deserves a trophy for the first player to play all his matches. He also at present has the highest number of points but Ian Moody has games in hand and is looming menacingly at his shoulder. The bookies favourite, Paul Lindsay, made a slower start but is now accelerating and is strongly tipped to be amongst the finalists. The remaining three finalist slots are up for grabs. I can confirm the the date of the finals will remain 1st March but, with two of the remaining days before 22 February being lost because of the closure of the courts for refurbishment, I will add two days to the closing date. So the finalists will be the top six by the end of play on 24 Feburary as shown on "my courts". As this will reduce the number of days between the end of the round robing and the finals, I should be grateful if anyone who in the top six but won't be available for the finals would let me know by 25 February, so that I can offer his place to number seven. Also, please don't forget to submit your results promptly. Only results shown on "my courts" by the closing date will count. Despite the handicap system, the best players seem to be winning with only one match going "against the head" i.e. with a win by the player with (marginally) the greater handicap but I trust that the system is giving everyone better matches than would otherwise be the case. Please note that the handicaps have been set on the assumption that handicaps with the same sign are netted off but when a negative handicap player plays a positive handicap player, each should start with their full handicap. Netting off between postive and negative handicaps favours the stronger player and would, over time, result in the need for bigger negative handicaps, which can give rise to problems in finishing games in the 40 minute booking time slots.
