New Racketball league

The new racketball league is up. It runs until 9 September. This is a week longer than usual to avoid this league ending at the same time as the squash league and to give a bit of extra time to compensate for the extra difficulty of arranging matches during the holiday period. I hope this will mean that everyone plays all their matches!

In the league that has just finished, both box 1 and box 3 were keenly contested. There were fewer matches played in box 2, partly because Jon Miles had to withdraw because of injury.

Congratulations to Paul Lindsay for winning box 1 and congratulations also to the runner up, Bradley Sawyer who, until he was just pipped at the post by Paul, seemed set to break the stranglehold that Ian Moody, John Rowe and Paul Lindsay have held over the top spot in this box for the last several years.

The last Box 2 was won by Pete Edwards and he is therefore promoted to Box 1. He is joined by Alastair Putt, who was the runaway winner of the previous Box 2 but could not take up his promotion at the time because he was going abroad. Two players drop from Box 1 to Box 2, Philip Waters, who "deputised" for Alastair Putt, and David Stacey. The score sheets suggest that Philip struggled in box 1 but I'm told that his matches were more closely contested than the scores suggest, so it may not be long before he is back in the top flight. Peter Lewis drops from Box 2 to box 3.

Box 3 was won by Chris Hayes, who is therefore promoted to box 2. At the other end of the box, I came, bottom, for the first time ever. I regard this as a sign of the ever improving standards of the other players! Dez Lewington, who was to have been the one new player in the last league, appears to have found it impossible combine racketball with his duties as club manager at a time of staff shortages and played none of his matches. He is therefore dropped from the league. He will, of course, be welcome to join at some time in the future if the staffing issue is resolved and he has time for racketball. The box has one new player, Max Bond, who is new to racketball but is an accomplished squash player.

I will put a new handicap sheet on the board. The only changes are to increase Bradley Sawyer's handicap to -9 as a tribute to his ever increasing success and to set an initial handicap for Max at +3.
